SECONDARY 1E2 SUNGEI BULOH TRIP SUMMARY

My first impression about this trip was that it would be very boring with us receiving the biggest treatment: Mosquito bites. The trip proved how wrong I was. We went there and were treated to a pungent smell of mosquito repellent in the air. Then Miss Poh distributed all the necessary items like all the pails and the disposable cups. Then, we set off. Well, the first part already proved wrong and I was grumbling all the way but didn’t show my attitude. We were asked to measure the pH value of the water there. I cheered up a bit, but my spirits were dampened after it rained.

We were asked to go to Platform 1 to collect seawater and to compare our results. The walk was boring, but the scenery was excellent. I particularly enjoyed staring, taking in the cool breeze and just looking at the vast body of the ocean. After collecting the seawater, the teachers allowed us to roam around Platform 1, but obviously around it. I got my fair share of watching some long beak fishes and was very amazed at the tranquility of the area. The long beak fishes were quite nice to look at, their bright bottle-green mouths or their beaks, as the teachers call it. There were many mangroves, their roots sticking out of the water. I also took the chance to read all about mangroves. There were lazy snails relaxing on the tree, with their multi-colored shells visible. I was amazed as I had only seen snails with brown shells and not fashionable colors like the ones here in Sungei Buloh.

We collected the data and went back to have a snack and then we left. Mr. Leong, who went with the other group, showed us all the pictures taken. Other than my friends, the other route my other classmates went also was fun, looking at the crabs, squirrels and monitor lizards pictures taken close up. I was also amazed at how close they could go up to the monitor lizards. Girls are supposed to be scared of them. It was an enjoyable experience for Leddin and me as we learnt about wildlife and how to collect data and comparing them. I hope Yusof Ishak Secondary would post more excursions for us like this one. Sorry we don’t have any videos or pictures to show.

STUFFY, ITCHY AND a bit BORIN...

We reached Sungei Buloh and we were divided into our assigned groups. We had a briefing and then we were each given a tablet pc and a webcam for us to scan barcodes.My webcam was a bit blurr so i could not scan the barcodes.Mr leong and Chris helped me with it but it was still blurr. My group members headed for the next station while i was stuck behind at station 1. It was very irritating and difficult to use the webcam but usin the internet on the pc was very fun.In the end, i did not use the webcam at all as i had given up on trying. I watched all my others classmates use the webcam, i did not feel jealous. I was free and did not have to stop at any station.A few other schools were there and when they saw our school usin the tablet pc, they were all jealous. It was quite irritating. They said we act rich only.While on the way, we saw a squirrel. It was so cute and it was not afraid of us. It stood still while we took pictures of it.There were a lot of mosquitos and other insects.We learnt about the flora and fauna of Sungei Buloh.Not many interesting things to see though. It was fun but a bit boring walking here and there scanning barcodes for 1 hour.After that, we ate and sat at the cafeteria waiting for the bus. We took a class photo and group photo. The one thing we hated were all the students starring at us using the tablet pc.

Trip to Sungei Buloh 1e2 group 4

Today we went for sungei buloh trip.
Before we get into the bus, we were ask to meet our teacher at com lab 4 at level 2.
There we were being group n getting ready.
After that we were told to be in tows at the foyer.
Then, we went into the bus and our trip began there.
haha. After reaching at sungei buloh,we were given a lap top each with a webcam.
Then we were given a briefing about the web cam which were called Quickmatch.
We then, was told to get ready and off we go by groups..
Before that, we had given each a job to do.
Hehe. After we had finished all the station,we went to meet our teachers.
There we were given an instruction which we can have a break for a while.
During our break time, we had taken many pictures but we could not upload it.
Suddenly it starts to rain, not to heavy.
Haha. We then get into the bus quickly.
Soon we had reached back to school.

Today we went for the sugei buloh trip..before we went in the morning we had some briefing and then we assemble in the foyer and then went boarded the bus..sungei buloh isnt far after a distance of about 15 min ...we reached there there were many school over there there were riverside and maha bhodi and many more other school,soon we were lead into a shelter by the teacher we wasnt with our friends..because we were separated into two groups..we were the one with the data logger...
We had to measure the pH value,temperature,conductivity of the water,air around the shelter.we had three sensor,the one to measure the temparature,the conductivity and the pH value it was very interesting..and we were pround of ourself as when people walk past we heard compliment of something like wow..this school so high tech this school like so fun..we really enjoyed ourselves at that part although the weather was rather wet ...
After that the teachers ask the leader to move on with her to another platform to get the rading as the weather was wet only the leaders followed but after awhile the weather when back to normal the teacher make a phone call and as the other members to come along..on the way there was some accident ...someone in the group drop their data loggers..and went they reach the platform the realise that their plastic pen was missing...
After doing everything and while proceeding back we were ask to look on the way for the plastic pen...we didnt have any clues of it..after to we went back to the entrance and while the teachers are collecting back the sensors..it finally came back a instructor got it inside a pail...such a relieve... We had our breaks and went to the cafe over there to eat and relax...after awhile the whole class gather again and took photos and waited for the bus to come ...after awhile the bus came and we finally went back to school...school sweet school ...haha.we went back to com lab 4 and had a break again..later when everyone is back we tried logging in into the blog.. 1E2 TRIP TO SUNGEI BULOH

Today, we went to Sungei Buloh.The journey from the school to there took us around 20 mins.When we reached there,the teacher told us to get off the bus and line up in twos.We went to a shelter on our way to the journey.We stopped there to get some samples from the river water and measured the temperature,conductivity and the pH level of the water.While we were finishing,it started to rain.We cannot go to the next station due to the rain as some of the pupils did not bring umbrellas.So,one of the teachers told the group leaders to use umbrella to go to the next station to collect water and the rest stay at the shelter.When we reached there, the rain had stopped.So,the teacher called the rest of the pupils to go to the next station.When we all reached there,we started taking the water from the river and we did experiments which are the smae as the previous one.After finishing, we went back to the starting point to have our break.To our dismay,the food there was very expensive.So we decided to go back to school to have our meal.Soon the bus came, we boarded the bus and headed back to our school.

sungei buloh trip for 1E2 group 2 and route 2

Today our class 1E2 went to sungei buloh for science,
and our class was divided into two route.
Route 1 and Route 2,index one to 20 was in route 2,
and index twenty-one to the last person in our class.
we all took the bus and took around 20 minutes to reach sungei buloh
when we got down,we went to somewhere near the toilet to get into our groups.
One was using the webcams installed on the Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC), to access information on the wetland reserve.
The other was using dataloggers to find more about the temperature of air and water, conductivity of water and PH level of the water at the sections of Sungei Buloh.
My group was doing the webcams installed on the Ultra Mobile PC.
Our so-called task was to scan those bar-codes found on the mangrove walkway using our webcams.
There was about 20 bar-codes.
Starting our hands were shaky and we took a long time to scan the bar-codes.
but soon we got used to it and we scan the code quite fast and we moved to the next
station.it was very fun scaning the bar code and all of us learnt about the flora and florna.we also saw some animals on our way these are afew

Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve - 1E2 group 3

When we first get the laptop, we were thinking what that webcam for. After listening to what the person-in-charge say, We then know that the webcam is for scanning barcode. We got to try it. We first do it and our hand keep shaking and we could not even stop for a second or more. The person-in-charge tell us that we have to stop and he say that there are around 15-20 station for us to try and we could master it while doing the scanning. We think that the use of IT in Sungei Buloh is very interesting.
As for the interesting things that we see as we walked around the Mangrove Boardwalk. We saw a squirrel doing gymnastic (just hanging on the branch of the tree), we use Digital Camera and handphones to take the picture of it. We also saw an organism that is white in colour , almost transparent. After seeing we straight away think of leech as it is long and a bit fat. We walked somemore and we could see some of the small crab climbing up the tree. We also saw Mudskipper, so big and fat. Here are some of our comments.
Our Comments:
YueXi: I feel that this trip was very interesting as there were many different insects and animals but there were too many mosquitoes so I did not really like the mosquito haha and one thing I like the most is the squirrel, Super cute!
Hidayah: I feel that the trip is so fun and adventuros. I saw lots of wild animals. The most interesting thing is when we scan the bar codes useing the webcam on the tablet PC.
YenTing: I think this trip was good as we could learn some facts about the plants and animals and when scanning the barcodes, I could see a Mudskipper lying on the mangrove tree. This trip allows us to train our hand's steady (how we scan the barcodes as we could not move for a few seconds as it was trying to scan).

Class 1e2 Group 1 [Science IT Project 2007]

Hello. =]

Today class 1e2 went to Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve.

Our class was splited into two groups.

One was using the webcams installed on the Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC), to access information on the wetland reserve.

The other was using dataloggers to find more about the temperature of air and water, conductivity of water and PH level of the water at the sections of Sungei Buloh.

My group was doing the webcams installed on the Ultra Mobile PC.

Our so-called task was to scan those bar-codes found on the mangrove walkway using our webcams.

There was about 20 bar-codes.

Starting our hands were shaky and we took a long time to scan the bar-codes.

We learn about flora and florna.

The most interesting part was going round scanning bar-codes and learning about different things.

We also learned about teamwork and others stuffs.

Last but not least, the animals we saw when walking the mangrove walkway.

Today we went to Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve for a IT Science project.We had a lesson outside class so it is different enviroment.We saw two small squirrel hugging each other,they were very cute.We learn how to measure the temperature of the air the water from the lake.Although the computer was quite lag but we still manage to get our work done within the given time.We also saw many small fishes there.I feel that this trip was fun,enjoyable and we learned many things.

Sungei Buloh Learning Journey

The trip has provided a wonderful opportunity for students to learn more about the biodiversity in Singapore through first-hand experience of a real mangrove environment. It complements the classroom lessons and arouses the students' interest in Biology. The use of technology enhanced the whole experience and encouraged the exploration of new ways of learning outside the classroom. Kudos to the team of teachers who made this trip such an enjoyable and enrichment one !!

They were at the Mangrove Boardwalk, where they embarked on the Wireless Learning Trail, which is the first of its kind in the parks in Singapore. Students used webcams installed on the Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC), to access information on the wetland reserve.

1E1 - The last group ☆★

The trip to Sungei Buloh wetland reserve was interesting as we could learn about how to handle the different kinds of sensors while we are exploring the Mangrove Boardwalk and route 1. We used the webcams to access information on the wetland reserve.At Route 1, we used dataloggers to find more about the temperature of air and water, conductivity of water and PH level of the water at the sections of Sungei Buloh. We realized that we can learn many different kinds of things not only in our classroom but as well as from the outdoor activities. The IT project in wetland reserve was very meaningful activity as we could take a closer look at the beautiful nature and many different skills including how to take a measurement using the different sensors. I hope we will have more chance to go such an 'outdoor activities' that wouild benefit us in many ways :D

Trip to Sungei Buloh (1E1 group 5)

Hello. :D
It was rather fun today, at Sungei Buloh, as we all worked as a team and at times, applied some knowledge of Science onto the activities we had to do, for example at one point we had to use the pail to collect samples of the water. Boon Keat and Karthik held on to the end of the string, and one of us threw the pail down, so that it is able to overturn and collect the water.

Another group, gave us a clever suggestion too; hold the string tightly, and run across. The pail is bound to collect some sample of water. While we walked to the next station, we too found many other animals along the way. Moniter lizards, squirrels, and two monkey-look-alike animals, sitting on the tree carressing each other.

While Karthik and Boonkeat took videos of Marcus and Weiming taking the pH of the water, conductivity of the water and the temperature of the air, we racked our brains and tried to make the best out of it. The two stations were soon completed in no time, and we had to go back to the entrance once more, take a rest and return to school.

As we were walking back, we chatted and had fun, talking about many different things. The teachers were kind enough to help us remove the sensors off our back (incase it got lost or broken). We were allowed to buy ice-creams, and snacks and eat it befoe we board our bus. Groups clattered all around, and as there were other schools there at the same time, it was rather squeezy.

We returned to school soon, had another short break and listened to instructions regarding about the project. We were dismissed and we all left happily.
We enjoyed our day today, at Sungei Buloh.

1e1 group6 ,

our journey there was quite fun. We took the bus from school and it took us about 20 mins to reach Sungai Buloh Nature Reserve.When we reached there, we sat down in front of the reception so that the teachers could give us our equipments and brief us a little. When all the briefing was done, we went into the nature reserve ,when we reached our first stop.we had to throw down the pail, which was tied with a long string, in to a big river. We had to take the water and measure their temperature , pH and the conductivity. When we had finished on the first stop , we moved on to the second station. We repeated the process and then we proceeded went back to the reception. Then when all of it was done we went back to school , then we blogged .Then when we were released we went home.

1E1 Group 1; route 1

HELLO (:

On this trip to Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, we took the route 1. On this route, we used dataloggers to investigate the conditions of the water and air at two locations (Main Hide 1A and Platform 1). We carried out our investigations on the temperature of air and water, conductivity of water and the pH level of the water at the specified locations.

We were very excited upon reaching our destination. Each group was given two disposable plastic cups, a bucket, a nylon string,all three sensors and of course, the dataloggers. First, we went to the Main Hide 1A. There, we were instructed to fill our pails with water, as much as could. then we were to carry out our investigations on the spot. Next, we were to proceed to Platform 1. we then repeated our proceeudres that we did at Main Hide 1A. the last substance that we were supposed to test was the tap water. unfortunately, we did not get around to doing it.

we went back to school soon after. we had our lunch and went home :D

Mangrove Boardwalk

In this learning journey to Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve,we has learnt flora,fauna,teamwork and to use the mini laptop.Some example of the flora we learnt are Brumguiera gymnorrhiza and Avicemia abla.Some description about the Brunguiera gymnorrhiza and Avicemia abla,Brunguiera gymnorrhiza has slightly angular hypocotyl is cigar-shaped with a slightly blunt narrowed apex(tip)and for Avicemia abla has a greyish green fruit is teardrop in shape and contains one germinating seed.Example for Fauna are Barnacle , cicada and archer fish.

This is the picture that we have taken during the activity. Although there isn't much, but it shows that we did look into every details carefully. (:
We were quite amazed by the connection of the internet on the laptop given by the staff there. It is because even though we are in the Mangrove Broadwalk,we still can connect to the internet to find informations. Before we started setting out, we tried some testing to check if the webcam can scan the zap code. We encounter much problems such as how to scan, how to make the screen clearer, but it was fun.
We saw some animals there as well as plants, we were also being bitten by mosquitoes. We have been looking for informations on the tree called Blind-your-eyes, when we know that that tree can kill people, we were quite shock.
The uses of the tree Blind-your-eyes can be use to poison fish and once if contact with eyes, it will cause temporary blindness.
The uses for Aricennia alba are that the wood is not suitable to set fire because it burns smouldering except for smoking fish. The fruit can be eaten roasted, boiled and also sundried.
The fauna in the picture is the snail. Species of land snails live in almost every kind of habitat, from deserts and mountains, to marshes, woodland, and gardens. However, certain species are "anthropophilic", which means they are found most often around human habitation.
In overall, we enjoyed the trip there very much.

Our trip to sungei buloh was very fun and exciting. We saw many flora esspecially mangroves plants, we found out that they breathe through their roots.
Today we(Gabirel, Viknesh, Edgar, Min young)
learnt many different things.for example, we learnt how to use
the mini labtop to scan barcodes on each of the stations. We saw many Fauna including mudskippers and a lot of cicadas!

Our experience in the Sungei Buloh wet land reserve is we learnt about different types of animals and plants.The activities were very interesting as we could use a laptop to search for information and take photos using webcam.The disadvantages using the laptops was that the laptop was very heavy and the web cam was not clear as well as the internet was not accesible in some areas.

There were many mosquitoes and ants which were very irritating and cause us to be very itchy,which made us scratch our bodies.We also had to use a lot of insect repellant to prevent us from getting bitten by insects such as ants and mosquitoes.
It was also very hard to search for animal.But there were a lot of mud skippers.

The field trip was enjoyable yet was very annoying because the insects such as ants and mosquitoes,we also saw spiders but luckily they did not bite us unlike the ants and mosquitoes.

I think that the trip to Sungei Buloh was both interesting and fun.We were able to learn about the creatures living there and how they adapt to the environment.
In the Mangrove Boardwalk,we were asked to use the Laptops equipped with a webcam to scan various scan codes to answer different questions about the environment
in the Mangrove Boardwalk.Although it was hot, we still had a lot of fun. We learnt how to use the laptops to scan the codes and go to website to do some quiz.Then we were told to walk around the Mangrove to find all twenty stations to do the quizes and learn more about the animals. We were also asked to use our handphones or camera to take some pictures of the animals.We also learnt about the flora and the fauna in the Mangrove Boardwalk.The staff there were very kind to everyone.Before leaving,he joked with us about paying the broken webcam which he said he could trade it with a PSP Slim,then we soon had to leave and board the bus back to our school.It may seem boring during the journey back to school but we had enjoyed ourselves..

In this learning journey to Sungei Boloh Nature Reserve, we learnt to use the small laptop given and get to learn more about the flora and fauna. The use of the technology is really fun and interesting. We get to search for informations and to take pictures using webcam.

Some examples of the plants we have seen are, Mangrove(Excpccarvia dogallodia), Brvgviera gymnorrniza, Aricennia alba, Rhizophor apiculate, Rhicophor mucronate and xylocarpers granatum.

-The uses for Aricennia alba are, the wood is not suitable for firewood as it burns smouldering except for smoking fish. The fruit can be eaten roasted, boiled or sundried.
-The uses for Rhicophora mucronate are the bank is used for tanning and dyeing. Medically, it is used against diarrhoea and extraction from build old leaves is given at childbirth.
-These plants' names are really unique and hard to remember.

Some examples for fauna are cicada, archer fish, otter, crab, mudskipper and spider.
-The two facts for Cicada are The male cicada makes the shrill sound by vibrating a membrane located on its abdomen to attract females and also have sucking mouthparts.
-The two facts for Otter are they have waterproof streamline body and is a powerful swimmer.

We really enjoyed this trip to Sungei Boloh and we will all like to visit this place again if we get another chance to. We went back to school and had our lunch.

Flora and Fauna

In sungei buloh nature reserve.Me and my team-mates found out a lot of things about flora or fauna.On flora,we have found pencil roots quite intereting and is really something unique.It is known as pencil roots because it's roots look like a pencil. The roots take in oxygen from the mud for the plants. The bird that we have noticed is green in colour and it allowed us to take pictures of itself. We also took pictures of a tiny mudskipper lying on the wood plank resting. After all this adventures, we each have thoughts about the Mangrove Broadwalk@ Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve and are going to share. We are starting with Yvonne. Yvonne feels that this Adventure is abit boring but there are many interesting animals and plants to see. Jiahui thinks that this adventure is totally interesting but not with the handling of webcams and laptops. Nisa feels that it has really brighten up her opinion on Flora and Fauna. This is our first time we went to Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve.We felt very excitied as we never been there before.When we reach our destination,we were given two unique laptops.A few minutes later,after our teachers given us instructions,we went off to find bar codes around the area which contains information on Fauna and Flora.As we were walking,our hands and legs started to itch.We quickly put on our insect repellent,we felt much better.While we were searching for information,we saw some crabs and mudskippers.We took out our handphones and took some photos.The interesting part that we encountered are the plants and animals.They were very beautiful.We also saw lots of other animals,they are well hidden within the thick mangrove swamp.It is very hard to spot the animals,we only managed to spot some.They escaped quickly after they noticed us looking at them.As we trekked through the mangrove swamp,we were bitten by many insects.Soon,we spotted a mudskipper,it was bigger than most other mudskippers.We also saw a tree-climbing crab.After we finish exploring the mangrove swamp,we head back to the reception table.We returned the laptops we borrowed.We also bought some refreshment as we are starving.After the trip we all agreed that we should come back again someday.We liked the trip very much although we got some mosquito bites as it was most educational,we certainly gained a few knowledge from this trip.

This is our fisrt time exploring sungei buloh using IT instruments.We find it very fun as we can take pictures of flora and fauna and we also can use the laptop to find more information about the flora and fauna.

Firstly,we can move around scanning the bar code of flora and fauna using the webcam connected to the laptop.Athough we have difficulties scanning the barcode,we still managed to finish scanning all the bar code and we enjoyed it.

Secondly,we saw a lot of flora and fauna around Sungei Buloh.I think it benefits us as we can know more about flora and fauna.We gain a lot knowledge as we had learn a lot of information about the plants and animals.

Lastly,we enjoyed the scenery of the environment of the place and it makes us feel relax and comfortable.Sungei Buloh is also an interesting place and it makes us feel like staying there.It also attracts the visitors and tourists to visit the place frequently.

We think this trip is very educational for us as we can gain a lot of knowledge thoughout this whole journey.If we have another chance to visit Sungei Buloh,we will not miss the chance.

Trip to Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve

Today , we went to Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve.Our group members are Qing Ling , Lai Guan , Jasra and Jocelyn. We went there to do our IT project - Flora and Fauna. We saw alot of animals and plants such as mudskippers, crabs,swamp fern and nipah. We took alot of shots of the organisms by webcam. We got to use the small laptop provided by the instructors. We then decided on two people to work on Flora and two people on Fauna. Under the instruction of Mr. Leong, we set out to look for 20 barcodes. It was like getting involve in an amazing race. It was both tiring and fun. We learnt how to co-operate with one another. We learnt more about Flora and Fauna. We think there should be more time to eat as there wasn't enough time. But overall we enjoyed ourselves and look forward to having activities like this. ((:

our members are saffire,pebbles,shereen,aziizah and nurul!
here are wad each of us tink abt our trip to sungei buloh.

we just simply love this trip! it let us learn more about mangrove and learn more about nature! we saw squirrels, monitor lizards and lots of other nature animals! we learnt how to use the ap-mixer and different sensors! i hope we can have such trips gain!=)

on the way there...we all had fun! when we reached there we all had fun!! i think most of us had fun there!! although there was alittle drizzling...

Welcome all to YISS Science IT Project @ Sungei Buloh 2007.

Our Secondary 1 Express students will be going to Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve for a Science IT Project.

1E1/1E3 : 22nd October 2007 (Monday)
1E2 : 24th October 2007 (Wednesday)

On each trip, they will be split into two groups. They will be exploring two sections of Sungei Buloh, namely the Mangrove Boardwalk and Route 1. The purpose of this project is to promote learning in the 'outdoor classroom'. It also means that students are less dependent on the availability of human guides for their learning experience.

At the Mangrove Boardwalk, the students will be embarking on the Wireless Learning Trail, which is the first of its kind in the parks in Singapore. Students will be using webcams installed on the Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC), to access information on the wetland reserve. They will be scanning the 2-D barcodes that are located strategically along the wireless learning trail. They will then be directed to information on the particular flora/fauna. They are also prompted with questions on what they can see along the trail. There are about 20 barcodes along the Mangrove Boardwalk.

At Route 1, the students will be using dataloggers to investigate the conditions of the water and air at two locations (Main Hide 1A and Platform 1). They will be investigating on the temperature of air and water, conductivity of water and the pH level of the water at the specified locations.
